(Question No. 276)

Senator Jones asked the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, upon notice, on 8 May 1985:

(1) Is the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs aware of a television appearance on the Good Morning Australia program, on 7 March 1985, by a Mr John McManus who described himself as Public Relations Officer with the John Birch Society.

(2) What is the purpose of Mr McManus's visit to Australia in view of his statement on the program, referred to in (1) above, that his society does not believe in democracy.

(3) Has the John Birch Society forged any link with other far-right groups in Australia such as the League of Rights.

Senator Grimes —The Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) I am informed that a Mr John McManus of the John Birch Society appeared in a live interiew in Brisbane's Good Morning Australia program on 7 May 1985.

(2) I am not aware personally of the reasons for his visit to Australia; however a report in the Australian on 9 May 1985 quoted Mr John McManus as saying that he was visiting Australia to share experience and to learn.

(3) I have no knowledge of links the John Birch Society may have forged with the League of Rights or other groups in Australia.
