Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy) —by leave-Senator Childs's question of Senator Gietzelt on the future of sand mining on Fraser Island reminded me that I was subject to a significant misrepresentation in the same Bulletin article from which Senator Childs quoted. I refer to the article in the 8 October edition under the heading `Moves to end Fraser Island export ban'. The article stated that sand miners had said that they had received hints from me that the Government may entertain a resumption of sand mining on the island. The truth of the matter is this Mr Reinhardt, the author of the article, contacted my office before he wrote the article to seek comment on that point. He was told that there had been no such suggestion from me. For some reason, this denial was omitted from the published story. To set the record straight, I have never indicated in any way to sand miners or to anyone else that the Hawke Government might accept resumption of sand mining on Fraser Island.
