Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(6.57) —I simply wish to make a comment with respect to one of the last points made by the Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Button). He said that, if I read the last Budget, I would see quite clearly that the words used are equivocal. But when the matter was pursued post-Budget assurances were given, both in this place and in the House of Representatives, that what was being sought by the Government was a full discounting for the costs of giving rises. The explanation given by the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce and his colleagues was that that was what those words meant and the weasel-words that were used in the Budget were clearly explained to mean that. I think the Minister is simply gilding the lily in this debate and misleading this chamber in a quite obvious way.
