Senator GRIMES (Manager of Government Business)(11.40) —I have no knowledge of the matters raised by Senator Jessop. I will refer them to the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, Senator Button, for urgent reply.

I dare say, Mr President, that you will wish to reply to Senator Michael Baume. I just say that whether or not the computers are working, for as long as I have been a member of the Senate there have been complaints that Estimates Committee Hansards do not come out on time.

The PRESIDENT —In response to the matter that has been raised by Senator Michael Baume, I can say that I have had a number of complaints this week from honourable senators about the late arrival of daily Hansards as well as Senate Estimates Committees' Hansard. As I told the Senate one day this week, the problem relates to the introduction of new equipment in the Government Printing Office, as has been mentioned by Senator Michael Baume. I can inform the Senate that yesterday I wrote a letter to the Minister in charge of the Government Printer expressing concern on behalf of the Senate at the delays and asking that all steps possible be taken to rectify the problem so that the difficulties will be overcome at an early point in time.

I also understand that the Government Printer himself, Mr Thompson, was admitted to hospital last weekend to undergo a number of tests. The information given to me this morning was that he would be off work for some time. While I respond to Senator Michael Baume, I also take this opportunity, on behalf of all honourable senators, to wish Mr Thompson a complete and speedy recovery to good health.

Before the Senate adjourns, I advise honourable senators that Estimates Committee A will meet in the chamber, Estimates Committee B will meet in Committee Rooms 1 and 2, and Estimates Committee C will meet in Committee Room 6. Prior to the sitting of the Committees, the bells will be rung for three minutes.

I also inform honourable senators that if Estimates Committees A and B complete examinations early, Estimates Committees D and E may then meet. Estimates Committee C will also meet in the chamber tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Senate adjourned at 11.42 a.m. until Tuesday, 8 October, at 2 p.m.
