(Question No. 290)

Senator Lewis asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, 10 May 1985:

In respect of the development of the Gaslight Estate at Evatt, using fast tracking construction:

(a) what was the total cost of developing each block of land on which a Government house has been erected;

(b) what was the total cost of erecting each Government house in the first stage of this development; and

(c) how do these costs compare with similar developments on Government serviced land using conventional construction methods.

Senator Gietzelt —The following response has been provided to the honourable senator's question:

(a) In arriving at the payment for the lease of the estate an allowance of $540 000 was made to cover the cost of servicing the 30 Government house sites (i.e. $18 000 per block). Costs were not determined for individual blocks.

(b) The cost charged for the 30 Government houses provided in the Estate was $1 266 000. This is an average cost of $42 200.

(c) The allowance made for the cost of land servicing was about the same as for a National Capital Development Commission undertaking. Based on average cost per square metre the cost charged for the Government housing was again about the same as for National Captial Development Commission constructed houses.
