Senator RYAN —Earlier today in Question Time Senator Collard asked me a question about evacuations caused by suspected asbestos leaks at the National Library. Independent scientific tests have shown that the asbestos fibres which triggered high readings and caused recent evacuations from the National Library building were not of the type of asbestos being removed. Guards have been placed on the 12 monitors to prevent physical tampering during working hours. Part time contract staff are employed to guard the monitors until readings are taken each day. We acknowledge that evacuations seriously inconvenience readers and staff and are costly to the taxpayer. The Library management maintains contact with the contractors removing the asbestos and the engineers, architects and unions involved, in an effort to eliminate any risk to health, inconvenience to readers and an unnecessary waste of staff time.
