(Question No. 400)


Senator Mason asked the Minister for Resources and Energy, upon notice, on 21 August 1985:

(1) What allowance was made in the 1984-85 Budget for maintenance and repair of the nuclear reactor at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories in New South Wales.

(2) How much of the allowance referred to in (1) above has been used for maintenance, and how much for repairs.

(3) Are more funds needed to carry out routine maintenance at the facility; if so could the current state of the reactor constitute a public hazard.


Senator Gareth Evans —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) 1984-85 expenditure on routine repair and maintenance for the reactor HIFAR was $681,814. Apart from the expenditure on routine repairs and maintenance of HIFAR, the Government has committed special allocations over the financial years 1980-81 to 1987-88 totalling $4.7m for capital works and services for a program of refurbishment of the reactor. This program, scheduled to be completed in 1987, will ensure the continued safe operation of HIFAR into the 1990's.

(2) Repairs $208,786; maintenance $473,028.
