Senator VALLENTINE —I address my question to the Minister representing the Minister for Defence. How many times in the past four years have air facilities been used on Cocos (Keeling) Islands by American surveillance aircraft? Under what agreement have these visits been made? What has been their mission? What types of aircraft have been involved? Can the Government say whether these aircraft carry nuclear weapons? What other facilities does the United States of America have on Cocos (Keeling) Islands? Are the Cocos (Keeling) Islands being used for any other military activities?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I am afraid that I do not have any information at all in front of me as to the use of Cocos (Keeling) Islands by United States military personnel or equipment. Accordingly, I will obtain the information from the Minister for Defence. It would be a help if Senator Vallentine would give me some advance notice of such questions in future so that I can help her.
