(Question No. 130)

Senator Peter Baume asked the Minister representing the Minister for Health, upon notice, on 25 March 1985:

Has the Minister for Health appointed a departmental committee to report to him on procedures for hastening the implementation of the recommendations of the Report of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Welfare on Drug Problems in Australia (tabled on 25 October 1977), agreed upon in 1980 but not yet implemented; if so:

(a) has the committee already reported, and, if so, what procedures has it put forward to hasten the implementation of the recommendations of the Senate Committee; and

(b) if the Committee has not reported, when will it report.

Senator Grimes —The Minister for Health has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(a) and (b) No. The response in 1980 to the Report of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Welfare on Drug Problems in Australia was the response of the previous Government. My Government has announced its own response to the drug problems in Australia-the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse. The recommendations contained in the 1977 Report are being considered in the context of the National Campaign.
