Senator Maguire asked the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Public Service Matters, upon notice, on 27 March 1985:

(1) What was the total number of employees of the Commonwealth Government and its statutory authorities in (a) April 1984; and (b) April 1985 or the latest available month.

(2) What was the total number of employees of the Commonwealth Government and its statutory authorities in South Australia in (a) April 1984; and (b) April 1985 or the latest available month.

(3) In which Commonwealth departments and statutory authorities in South Australia, and by how much, did employment fall between April 1984 and April 1985 or the latest available month.


Senator Walsh —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) (a) 421,300; (b) 427,000 (December 1984).

(2) (a) 37,000; (b) 36,800 (December 1984).

(3) Particulars of Commonwealth departments and statutory authorities in South Australia which recorded falls in employment between April and December 1984 are as follows:
