(Question No. 381)

Senator Reid asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 31 May 1985.

(1) When a dog is injured on a street in the Australian Capital Territory, does the dog patrolman take the animal to a veterinary surgeon or is the dog destroyed at the scene of the injury.

(2) What training in animal euthanasia do Australian Capital Territory dog patrolmen receive.

Senator Gietzelt —The following answer has been provided to the honourable senator's question:

(1) This is left to the patrolman's discretion.

(2) They are trained in humane methods of animal euthanasia by the Government veterinarian. However, Australian Capital Territory dog patrolmen do not carry or use restricted or dangerous drugs.
