Senator VALLENTINE —My question is addressed to the Minister representing the Prime Minister. Has the Prime Minister sent a message of condolence to the Greenpeace organisation over the death of a crew member as a result of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior? What action is the Government prepared to take to repudiate this act of international terrorism?

Senator BUTTON —I am not sure whether a message of condolence was actually sent to the Greenpeace organisation. I will find out about that. It may well be more appropriate that it was sent somewhere else; for instance, to the relatives, if any, of the deceased photographer who was on the ship in question. I will obtain information about that aspect of the question for Senator Vallentine. My colleague Senator Gareth Evans, as Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, made a statement about this issue at the appropriate time. We have had discussions with the New Zealand Government about this matter. My interpretation of what has been said to this Government is that the New Zealand Government would like to handle the matter and does not feel that the situation would be helped by comments from other governments at this stage.
