Senator PETER RAE(9.57) —I move:

That the Senate take note of the paper.

As a Senate representative on the Council of the Australian National University and a member of the finance committee of that university I want to give a very brief explanation to the Senate without holding up the Senate tonight because it wishes to get on with other business. The fact that there is an interim annual report is in no way the fault of or a default by the university. Rather, a number of developments are taking place in improving the form of presentation of accounts at the university and a number of legal questions in relation to the way in which trust accounts are prepared have involved the obtaining of both legal and auditing opinions which have held up the report. In every other way the university has, as that excellent university has done over many years, produced an effective, efficient, appropriate report on time. It has no reason to be chastised in any way by the parliament for being late in the presentation of its report. I briefly make that explanation with a view to making a more detailed explanation at another time. I seek leave to continue my remarks later.

Leave granted; debate adjourned.
