Senator ELSTOB —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism. It refers to the New Zealand accident compensation rates payable to Australian travellers. Is the Minister aware that, for death or injury resulting from an accident, compensation payable to a foreign national not earning income in New Zealand is $NZ4,000 plus $NZ2,000 for each dependant child, that only those funeral expenses incurred within New Zealand will be met and that no further payments will be made or expenses met? Is the Minister satisfied that the current rates of New Zealand compensation payments are adequate? Will the Minister agree to investigate the matter?

Senator RYAN —I have no information with me to answer Senator Elstob's question but, obviously, the matter he raises is of great concern. I will make sure that the investigation to which he has referred in his question is carried out by Mr Brown as soon as possible.
