Senator SIDDONS —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate condemns the Government-

(a) for not acting on the 1984 Green Paper which recommended that the Trade Practices Act be altered so that the Trade Practices Commission could reject any mergers which substantially lessen competition;

(b) for permitting the Coles/Myer merger to threaten the livelihood of small business, which will find it difficult to compete with the new retailing giant; and

(c) for not acting to prevent a merger which will increase the prices paid by consumers of all retail goods imported by or manufactured exclusively for the Myer/Coles group,

and urges the Government to quickly implement the recommendations of the 1984 Green Paper so as to protect Australian small business and consumers against future mergers.
