Senator CHILDS —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Communications. Australia Post advises customers that there is a 24 -hour delivery service between capital cities. However, I am informed that there are frequent delays. A letter recently posted in Sydney on 6 May arrived in Launceston via Hobart on 14 May in spite of being correctly addressed. What are the reasons for such postal delays? What is being done to improve the situation?

Senator BUTTON —I am sorry to be pedantic in answer to the honourable senator's question, but a letter posted on 26 May in Sydney which arrives in Tasmania on 14 May is a phenomenal performance for Australia Post. As the letter was posted in Sydney I assume that there are still problems in the organisation of the Sydney mail deliveries. Australia Post has been making very serious efforts to overcome those difficulties. In view of the fact that the question requires a more detailed answer, I will direct it to the Minister for Communications and obtain an answer as quickly as possible.
