Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(3.07) —It is now my understanding that the Australian Democrats will support the motion which would bring this matter before the Senate. I make that statement to forestall any unnecessary and time-wasting debate on that aspect of it. That understanding, which I have from the Australian Democrats, relates to our preparedness to make some amendments to the legislation. Indeed, I would like to defer to the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Durack, who has the conduct of this matter on behalf of the Opposition. But in discussions since the matter came on for debate this morning, the suggestion has been made that the word ' unduly' might be removed from the motion which Senator Durack will be seeking to move today. We wish the word 'unduly' to be deleted where it appears in paragraphs 2(a), (b) and (c) of the motion.

In addition, the Australian Democrats have indicated to us that they do not wish to nominate an additional member to the Committee although Senator Harradine is anxious to join the Committee for that task. It would therefore be our intention to substitute the words 'Leader of the Government' for the words ' Leader of the Australian Democrats' where those words appear in paragraph 5. That would effectively enable the Committee to be enlarged and would permit Senator Harradine to join the Committee but would not require the Australian Democrats to join the Committee. The motion I moved earlier today will enable us to deal with Notice of Motion No. 78 which appears in Senator Durack's name during this session of General Business of the Senate.
