Senator COATES —Can the Minister representing the Minister for Communications inform me what progress has been made under the scheme to provide Australian Broadcasting Corporation medium frequency radio services to isolated and underserviced communities in the five western Tasmanian centres of Rosebery, Savage River, Strahan, Waratah and Zeehan?

Senator RYAN —I can inform Senator Coates that the Government is concerned that 50 years after the establishment of the ABC there are still some Australians who do not receive an adequate radio service. The Department of Communications has identified 12 areas of particular need, amongst which are Rosebery, Savage River , Strahan, Waratah and Zeehan. A proposal for an ABC FM service to serve these areas has been prepared in the Department of Communications and sent to the ABC for consideration. If the proposal is approved by the ABC it will be forwarded as soon as possible to Telecom Australia, which will carry out the construction of the service as contractor to the Department of Communications.
