Senator GRIMES (Acting Leader of the Government in the Senate) —I inform the Senate that the Minister for Industry and Commerce (Senator Button) left Australia on 4 May to address a symposium in Kuala Lumpur on 'ASEAN, Australia and Japan' and to hold industry discussions in Japan. I will act as Leader of the Government in the Senate and the Hon. John Brown is Acting Minister for Industry and Commerce until Senator Button returns on 13 May. In this chamber, Senator Walsh will represent the Minister for Industry and Commerce and the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations (Mr Willis) and Senator Susan Ryan will represent the Minister for Communications in Senator Button's absence.

I also inform the Senate that the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade (Mr Lionel Bowen) left Australia on 4 May to attend meetings on international trade with United States Special Trade Representative Brock in Washington. The Minister for Resources and Energy (Senator Walsh) is acting Minister for Trade until Mr Bowen returns on 15 May. Finally, I inform the Senate that the Minister for Health (Dr Blewett) left Australia on 4 May to attend the World Health Organisation conference in Geneva. The Minister for Science and Technology (Mr Barry Jones) is Acting Minister for Health until Dr Blewett returns on 25 May.
