Senator Ryan —On 2 March 1984 (Hansard, page 324) Senator Macklin asked me a question without notice concerning a grant to the organising committee of the Fifth International Congress on Mathematical Education. I undertook to provide him with further information on an amount of $5,000 referred to in his question.

The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

I have been advised by the Special Minister of State, whose Department is responsible for the administration of the grants for international conferences scheme, under which the grant was made, that the amount of the grant to the Fifth International Congress on Mathematical Education will be $17,000. Mr Young 's Department, when it offered the initial grant of $5,000, advised the organisers that the amount was subject to review in the light of the outcome of a separate application for assistance by them to the Australian Development Assistance Bureau. This application was unsuccessful. The Special Minister reviewed the initial grant and decided, on the advice of the Interdepartmental Committee on Grants to International Conferences, to increase it to $17,000. In these circumstances the questions raised by Senator Macklin do not in my view require any further response.
