(Question No. 698)

Senator Peter Rae asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 6 March 1984:

(1) What effect will the reported savings of $24m on the FA18 program as a result of redesigned electrical equipment racks for the strike fighter's radar have on the total project cost of Australia's order of these aircraft.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The reported savings of $US24m on the FA18 program relate to the United States Navy program and are based on 1117 radars.

The redesigned radar rack is planned to be available for incorporation in 55 of our FA18s and on that basis we will save about $A1.3m at the current exchange rate. This saving will be accounted for in the next project cost update later this financial year.
