Senator Hamer asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 29 February 1984:

(1) What are the official positions of the staff members of the Media Unit in the office of the Prime Minister.

(2) Who holds those positions at present.

(3) What is the salary of each officer at present.

(4) What is the estimated total cost of the unit per annum.


Senator Gareth Evans —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1), (2) and (3) The Media Unit (or Press Office) in the Prime Minister's office has two journalists and three support positions compared with three journalists and three support positions under the Fraser Government. Salary costs as at 30 March 1984 are:

* Ministerial staff allowance of $14,694 per annum is payable to the occupants of the Press Secretary and Journalist Grade A2 positions by way of compensation for long and irregular hours and other special features of the job.

(4) The estimated salary and allowance cost of the present unit is $150,553 per annum. Similar costs for the former Prime Minister's Press Office were $191,173 per annum.

It is not possible to extract service and other operating costs.
