Senator Dame MARGARET GUILFOYLE — My question, which is directed to the Minister representing the Treasurer, follows a question asked earlier today by Senator Richardson about the prescribed payments tax system. I understand that the Australian Taxation Office experienced some difficulties in regard to the collection and administration of the tax. I wonder whether the advice from the Treasurer to the Minister indicated whether the system was operating smoothly. If not, will the Minister obtain that advice for me and provide it later?

Senator WALSH —The note I had from the Treasurer today does not go into that issue. If I remember correctly, in a discussion that took place a few weeks ago I was told that the number of applications for exemption or variation was substantially greater than had been estimated. Obviously that placed more pressure on the resources of the Taxation Office than had been expected. Because of that the actual payments may have been delayed somewhat. That is as I recall the discussion, but I will check with the Treasurer to ascertain whether he can confirm that that is the case and/or add anything to it.
