Senator MACKLIN —Mr President, I seek leave to make a personal explanation.

Leave granted.

Senator MACKLIN —The Minister for Veterans' Affairs (Senator Gietzelt), in answer to a question from Senator Colston during Question Time, said that I, as the Australian Democrats spokesperson on veterans' affairs, had unnecessarily raised concern in the veteran community. As the Minister will be aware, I was responding to a concern which presumably was expressed to his office, as it was to mine, about the review currently taking place. In answer to a question on the radio program PM on the day on which I released my Press statement I said:

My purpose in saying something at this stage while not waiting for the legislation is in the hope that we can derail it even before it gets into Parliament quite frankly because if those types of thing appear it would be enormously disturbing to many, many people.

Those people had already expressed the concern to me. I was hoping to dampen the concern, not unnecessarily raise it.
