Senator GIETZELT (Minister for Veterans' Affairs) —by leave-I am pleased to inform the Senate that the Executive Council this morning approved the appointment of Jocelyn McGirr as Deputy Chairman of the Repatriation Commission. Miss McGirr has a distinguished background in law, public administration and community service. She practised law with a leading Sydney firm of solicitors and has given excellent service in a range of community organisations. Miss McGirr is at present Executive Member of the New South Wales Privacy Committee.

The Repatriation Commission has important responsibilities in relation to the welfare of veterans and their dependants. I am particularly gratified that it has been possible to appoint someone so well qualified to this senior position on the Commission. I add that Miss McGirr's appointment is the first appointment of a woman to the Repatriation Commission in its 60-year history. I am particularly pleased that I can make this announcement on International Women's Day.
