Senator JONES —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

(a) That the Senate expresses surprise and regret at remarks made by the Queensland Minister for Maritime Services, Mr Goleby, on 1 March, describing the Painters and Dockers Union as 'stupid' for providing employment opportunities at Brisbane's Cairncross Dockyard for a handicapped Vietnam war veteran who lost an arm in the active service of his country, and urges that Government to adopt a more humane attitude toward handicapped persons in the future.

(b) That the Senate notes remarks by the same Minister blaming industrial action for retrenchments at the dockyard on 27 February when the Annual Report of the Port of Brisbane Authority, 1982-83, states quite clearly that Cairncross Dockyard was almost free of lost-time disputation in 1982-83 and that this was the result of the implementation on 24 December 1981 of the Brisbane Ship Repairs Industry Industrial Agreement.

(c) That the Senate deplores the policies of the Queensland Government that prevent the Cairncross Drydock from competing for Commonwealth contracts for RAN ship repairs, which is one of the genuine reasons 28 workers were sacked there on 27 February and urges that Government to ensure that practices in the management of the yard be changed so that it can compete for Commonwealth work in the future.
