(Question No. 623)

Senator Messner asked the Minister for Social Security, upon notice, on 16 December 1983:

(1) What are the names of the organisations and individuals consulted with by the Minister for Social Security following the announcement of the introduction of an assets test in the August 1983 Budget up to the introduction of the legislation.

(2) What were the duration of those consultations.

Senator Grimes —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) Since the announcement by the Treasurer in the Budget Speech on 23 August 1983, I have consulted and am continuing to consult with a large number of organisations and individuals about the introduction of an income and assets test. Some of the major organisations consulted have included the Australian Council of Social Service, the Australian Council on the Ageing and the Australian Council for Rehabilitation of Disabled.

(2) Because the consultations are continuing, discussions have already occurred over a period of several months with a corresponding variation in time of the duration of my meetings with organisations and individuals.
