(Question No. 581)

Senator Messner asked the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, upon notice, on 9 December 1983:

(1) Has the Minister for Veterans' Affairs sent letters to trade unions and State branches of the Australian Labor Party relating to the proposed assets test.

(2) What was contained in the letters.

(3) Will the Minister provide a list of all organisations and individuals who received such a letter.

(4) How much did the exercise cost.

(5) From what funds was this money appropriated.

Senator Gietzelt —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1), (2) and (3) A request for assistance in promoting a better understanding of the income and assets test was sent to all Federal members and senators, all Federal and State executives of the Labor, Liberal and National Country Parties, all branches and sub-branches of all national ex-service organisations and all branches of unions affiliated with the Australian Council of Trade Unions. The honourable senator was sent a copy on 23 December 1983 and will be aware of its contents.

(4) $4,000 (approximately).

(5) From the appropriations of the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
