(Question No. 545)

Senator Mason asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 18 November 1983:

(1) Will any Australian television network broadcast the United States-produced television film depicting the effects of nuclear war, The Day After.

(2) Will the Minister for Communications request the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to show the film in prime time nationally and with adequate publicity.

(3) Will the Minister indicate the reasons if the film is not to be shown in Australia.

Senator Button —The Minister for Communications has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question, based on advice received from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation endeavoured to purchase The Day After but television rights had already been sold to the Australian commercial television network Channel 10. Cinema rights for Australia are held by Roadshow Distributors Pty Ltd which plans to commence box office sales in February 1984.
