(Question No. 463)


Senator Mason asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 2 November 1983:

(1) What defence equipment has been sold by Australia to overseas nations for each financial year since 1970-71.

(2) What was (a) the nature; (b) the quantity; (c) the destination; and (d) the price in constant dollars, in each individual case.


Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) and (2) Contracts with other governments and agencies purchasing on their behalf include a non-disclosure clause which limits the publication of the details related to specific contracts.

The information provided below relates to Defence material sold by the Commonwealth to overseas countries since 1970-71.

NATURE OF EQUIPMENT SOLD

Small Arms and Spares: L1A1 Rifles and Spares, L2A1 Rifles and Spares, Rifle Magazines, Blank Firing Attachments, Skeleton Rifles, Laminated Handguards, Conversion Kits, Bren Barrels, Striker Firing Practice.

Guns: Oerlikon Guns and Spares, Bofors Spares, 105mm Gun Barrels.

Aircraft: Aircraft Components, Jindivik Aircraft and Spares, Jindivik Post Design Services, Gyroscope Spares, Jindivik MK4 Development, Reconditioned Aircraft Engines, Jindivik 700 Series Flight Trials.

Ammunition and Explosives: Cartridges Nato Ball, Fillers, Cartridges, Blanks, Practice Bombs, Grenades, Demolition Firing Devices, Missiles, Detonators, TNT, Propellant, RDX/TNT, Spotting Charges, Demolition Block 1 1/4 lb, Mine Anti- Personnel Practice F3, Thunderflashes, Simulator Bottle Noise, Primer 1 1/2 oz, Fuse Mine Practice, 500lb Bombs, High Explosive Complete with Electric Cable Assembly.

Marine Equipment: Markers Marine, FFG Shafting, Propellor.

Technical Equipment and Tools: Armourers Tools and Guages, Missile and Depot equipment, Magnetron, Transformers and Igniters, Heat Exhange Assembly, 28 Volt Generators, Brackets and Lugs for Generators.
