(Question No. 533)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 29 November 1983:

(1) What new authorities, committees, bureaus, or other such groups: (a) have been established; or (b) are proposed, by or within this Department since 5 March 1983.

(2) How many additional staff: (a) have been, or are being appointed; or (b) are proposed to be recruited, as a result.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) (a) and (2) (a) There have been five bodies established in the Department since 5 March 1983, staffed in the main by officers seconded from the Australian Public Service-APS. The details are as follows:

Established since 5 March 1983

Additional Staff

Royal Commission on the Use and Effects of Chemical Agents on Australian Personnel in Vietnam-established 13 May 1983;

*1 position vacant

Royal Commission on Australia's Security and Intelligence Agencies-established 17 May 1983;


Committee of Review of the Australian Institute of Multicultural Affairs- established 24 July 1983;


National Road Freight Industry Inquiry-established 5 September 1983; and

*6 positions vacant

Independent Economic Inquiry into Transport Services to the Northern Territory- established 15 September 1983.


* It is not yet established whether recruitment will be from within the APS or from outside.

(1) (b) and (2) (b) It is proposed to establish an inquiry into aviation cost recovery with an approximate staffing level of 12, the bulk of whom will be officers seconded from the Australian Public Service.
