Senator MASON —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Communications. I ask: Will any Australian television network broadcast the United States produced television film depicting the effects of nuclear war, The Day After? In particular, has the Australian Broadcasting Corporation sought to obtain this program and, in terms of my question on notice No. 545, show it in prime time nationally and with adequate publicity?

Senator BUTTON —I am indebted to Senator Mason for his question. I recall the previous question which he asked me. I am able to supply him with an answer. The answer is that exclusive television rights to the film are being purchased by the commercial network, Channel 10. The time of screening is for that network to determine. I am further advised that the Australian Broadcasting Corporation tried to obtain television rights to the film but was unsuccessful. I also understand that cinema rights for Australia for the film are being held by Roadshow Distributors Pty Ltd, which plan to commence box office sales in February 1984.
