Senator Dame MARGARET GUILFOYLE(5.16) —The Opposition does not oppose the Remuneration and Allowances Amendment Bill 1983 which relates to officers who are subject to the Remuneration Tribunals Act. Following the decision of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission in the national wage case the Government took the view that it would be appropriate to apply the 4.3 per cent salary increase to officers who are covered by this Act. It will be recognised that this follows the repeal of the Salaries and Wages Pause Act that had been introduced by the former Government and which related to Commonwealth public servants. As the Government has now taken the decision to apply that general wage and salary increase to those covered by the Remuneration Tribunals Act, the Opposition does not oppose the Bill and, at this stage of the session, I wish it a speedy passage.
