Senator GRIMES (Minister for Social Security) —Yesterday in Question Time Senator Messner asked me a question relating to the employment of staff in the Department of Social Security in connection with the proposed assets and incomes test. I undertook to provide the answer. At this stage a total of 482 staff are currently employed on activities associated with the proposed assets test. They are employed as follows: One hundred and thirteen working on planning and development activities in State headquarters and the central office, 369 new recruits undertaking basic training or who are gaining on the job experience so that they can replace staff who will be required for further training prior to the implementation of the incomes and assets test. The staff are being paid from the principal salaries appropriation for the Department of Social Security which is division 560.1.01, salaries and allowances.
