Senator PETER BAUME(9.36) —I would like to follow up what the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs (Senator Ryan) just said. Can I put to the Minister the situation of two high schools in Sydney of which I am aware- Killara High School, which is close to my home, and Leichhardt High School, which I had the privilege of visiting recently. The teachers at Leichhardt High told me that the completion rate of students might be something like 13 per cent to 15 per cent. Of course, I agree with the Minister, that that is a very worrying situation. The teachers, who are trying to assist, relate many of the problems faced by students to a whole range of difficulties which lie outside the school. The outcomes at Killara High School are very satisfactory. The completion rate to year 12 would be 70 per cent to 80 per cent. Both of those schools are within the government system. One is performing at a very high level ; the other is performing at a level which requires improvement in terms of the kind of outcome the Minister is talking about. In trying to produce more equitable outcomes, how will the Government approach that kind of problem?
