Senator WALTERS(10.40) —I support Senator Harradine's amendment. I take pleasure in asking Senator Chipp just one question. He indicated to me earlier today when we were debating these amendments that he doubted whether people would bother to read what was in their letter boxes. I agreed with him that people know very little about how parliament works. Unless they read every bit of the material in their letter boxes, they will be completely unaware that the life of the Senate is to be extended to eight years. It is all very well for the Attorney-General to say that the Parliament is to be extended from three to four years. I ask Senator Chipp how many people in Australia really know that senators will serve eight years if it is said that parliament will be extended from three to four years? Does Senator Chipp really believe that words to the effect that the Parliament will be extended from three to four years clearly indicate to the people of Australia that if that occurs the Senate will be extended from six to eight years?
