Senator JESSOP(9.53) —I do not want to frustrate the Attorney- General (Senator Gareth Evans) but I would like to make a comment on this matter and he may feel disposed to answer me. I want to contribute to this particular amendment. I agree that what Senator Harradine has said is the way to go but I also remind the Committee that as far as I am concerned, and as far as many people are concerned, this really does not involve the question of simultaneous elections so much as dissolving half the Senate. I support the thrust of Senator Walters's argument and draw Senator Harradine's attention to the fact that her proposal improves his amendment, and supports his views on whether we should have elections on the same day and at the same time. Many people have regard to the significance of what we are doing and as the question happens to deal with dissolving half the Senate, I support what Senator Walters has said.
