Senator DURACK(12.03) —We have been dealing with what are really quite consequential amendments. We have already had the debate on this question. I certainly wish to move the Opposition's amendment No. (4). However, amendments Nos (5), (6) and (7) all were dealt with in the debate that took place earlier on whether the Chief Electoral Officer should have a discretion. The Committee agreed that a discretion should be given but that it should be limited in the way in which the Attorney-General (Senator Gareth Evans) has moved. Therefore, I propose to withdraw the Opposition's amendments (5), (6) and (7). I will now move amendment No. (4)-

Senator Gareth Evans —To which I have no objection, if that helps.

Senator DURACK —I am pleased to hear that there is no objection to it. I move:

'(aa) by omitting from sub-section (1) ''may'' and substituting ''Shall'';'.

This amendment-

Senator Gareth Evans —It is consistent with what we are proposing.

Senator DURACK —I think it is.

Amendment agreed to.
