To the Honourable the President and Members of the Senate in Parliament assembled. The petition of the undersigned citizens of Australia respectfully showeth:

(1) That we are deeply concerned for the well-being of Mr Mart Niklus, a leading Estonian and Baltic human rights activist who is in ill health and imprisoned in solitary confinement in Perm Labour Camp No. 389/36 in Siberia.

(2) That Mr Mart Niklus has been imprisoned as a 'prisoner of conscience' for the non-violent exercise of his beliefs and is denied visiting and communication rights.

(3) That the Australian Government give its support to any initiatives in this case by Amnesty International which has adopted Mr Mart Niklus. Amnesty International believes he has committed no real crime and has never used or advocated the use of violence.

(4) That we urge the Australian Government to make representations to the Government of the Soviet Union to promptly release Mr Mart Niklus and grant him a passport and exit visa.

(5) That in its representations to the Government of the Soviet Union advise that the Australian Government has approved the sponsored entry of Mr Mart Niklus into Australia.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
