Senator HEARN —Is the Minister representing the Minister for Finance aware of continuing concern within the tyre industry about sales tax on retread tyres? Originally it was forecast that, for example, in the case of a retread steel radial tyre for a Ford Falcon, the typical net addition to the wholesale price of $25 would be about $3.60. Already representation has been made to me by employers, the Federated Rubber and Allied Workers Union of Australia and the Truck Owners and Operators Association. I understand that the Government has been monitoring the situation. I ask the Minister whether there is any evidence of loss of employment, excessive cost to the industry or threat to road safety?

Senator BUTTON —I hope the Government has been monitoring the industry as well as Senator Hearn clearly has. I am fully aware of the complaints which have been made in the past. I have had complaints from employer organisations and the Federated Rubber and Allied Workers Union. I will make inquiries of the Minister for Finance and give Senator Hearn an answer about the monitoring process and its consequences as quickly as possible.
