Senator JACK EVANS —My question is addressed to the Minister representing the Minister for Aviation. In light of the statement made by Mr Leslie, the Chairman of Qantas Airways Ltd, this morning that other national airlines are not comparable with Qantas because they operate on international plus internal airline routes, which makes them more profitable, will the Government allow Qantas to carry internal passengers travelling between remote capital cities of Australia?

Senator GIETZELT —Senator Jack Evans will appreciate that this is specifically a matter of Government policy, or at least it falls within ministerial responsibility. Therefore, it is one on which I cannot give a definitive answer. Clearly it falls completely within the jurisdiction of the Minister for Aviation and since I only represent him in this place all I can promise to do is to refer the question sympathetically to him for his consideration. I do know that both the previous Government and this Government have engaged in discussion about how to overcome some of the difficulties related to the profitability of Qantas.
