Senator Dame MARGARET GUILFOYLE — I direct a question to the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs. I noted Mr Hayden's statement that the Australian Secret Intelligence Service exercise 'took place without my knowledge'. I ask the Attorney-General: When did Mr Hayden first learn of the incident and when did the Department of Foreign Affairs first try to contact Mr Hayden about this matter?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I recall Mr Hayden saying yesterday that he first learnt about this matter when the Minister for Defence, Mr Scholes, rang him early yesterday morning-10 past eight was the time mentioned. I do not know when he was first contacted by the Department of Foreign Affairs but I will seek an answer from him and advise the honourable senator accordingly.
