Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General)(11.54) —Now that we are so close to the finishing tape-I also point out that Question Time is at 12 o'clock -I think it would be unfortunate if we got bogged down in an argument about this . I think we all appreciate some of the logistical difficulties about dealing with a three-sided or three-directioned ticket of this kind. But Senator Harradine's point is fairly unanswerable in terms of the current political reality; that there is a disposition on the part of some political groupings in this country to direct their supporters, not just two ways as between the major parties, but three ways. As Senator Sir John Carrick interjected, it may be, in principle, that that could extend to four, five or six ways. But again, taking a balanced course between the demands of strict logic on the one hand and political reality on the other, three seems a pretty fair compromise. I recommend to the Senate, accordingly, that Senator Harradine's amendments be accepted.
