Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Transport, upon notice, on 7 October 1983:

(1) is the report published in the Tennant Times (Northern Territory) on 30 September 1983, in which it was stated that only $1.2m was now being allocated to the unsealed section of the Stuart Highway in northern South Austalia, instead of the $4.5m originally referred to in Parliament by Transport Minister Mr Morris, accurate.

(2) How much will be allocated to the Stuart Highway this year.

(3) What is the anticipated total expenditure on the Stuart Highway.

(4) What is now the the anticipated completion date for the Stuart Highway.


Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Transport has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) No. South Australia's allocation of funds for national roads under the Australian Bicentennial Road Development (ABRD) Program in 1983-84 was increased by $4.5m to $16m to accelerate the sealing of the Stuart Highway and other high priority works on national highways in the State. The extra funds will enable the contract for the project between Marla and Mount Willoughby on the Stuart Highway to be called six months earlier than anticipated. An estimated $3.1m is to be spent on this project in 1983-84.

(2) Total expenditure on the Highway in South Australia in 1983-84 is expected to be $28.1m, comprising $14.8m under the Roads Grants Act and $13.3m under the ABRD Program.

(3) An estimated $150m on the Highway in South Australia comprising expenditure to date and estimates to completion in 1983-84 prices.

(4) December 1986.
