Senator GIETZELT (Minister for Veterans' Affairs) —by leave-I present, on behalf of the Minister for Aviation, Mr Beazley, whom I represent in this place, a progress statement on the report of the Senate Select Committee on Passenger Fares and Services to and from Tasmania. On 18 August 1981, the report of the Senate Select Committee which inquired into passenger fares and services to and from Tasmania was tabled. The Government is examining that report with a view to making a response to the Senate as soon as possible. Mr Deputy President , you will appreciate that the report raises many complex issues requiring careful study. It is a measure of the complexity of the matters raised in the report's recommendations that the previous Government had not responded to them prior to the dissolution of Parliament on 4 February of this year. Since 1981 a number of developments has occurred and important decisions were made in relation to matters covered in the report. These will be taken into consideration in the Government's response. I wish to assure honourable senators that the Government is aware of the significance of this report, particularly to the people of Tasmania, and I expect that it will be in a position to respond to the report's recommendations shortly.
