Mr Fitzgibbon asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 6 December 2000:

What proportion of the Government's Fuel Grant Scheme in its first three months of operation was paid to mining companies operating in regions in the grant applies.

Mr Costello (Treasurer) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

A fuel sales grant is provided for the sale of fuel in eligible location to an end user. To be eligible to register for a fuel sales grant an applicant must be a fuel retailer that sells fuel to the public. Some mining companies may be eligible to register as retailers but most would not be.

Records relating to fuel retailers that are registered for fuel sales grants, that would readily distinguish companies that may also be mining companies, are not maintained.
