To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives assembled in Parliament.

The petition of the citizens of Australia.

We request the House to amend GST legislation to reflect the fact that sanitary products are not luxury items and as such should be exempt from the GST. Not only are condoms, personal lubricants and sunscreen GST free but also incontinence pads on the grounds that without them, sufferers would be disabled. We believe that the same argument applies to sanitary products and the Federal Government is ignoring the needs of 52 per cent of the population by effectively taxing women for being women.

Your petitioners therefore pray that the House heeds our request and legislates for tampons and other sanitary products to be exempt from the GST.
