Mr LLOYD (1:55 PM) —I rise today to join with my colleague and friend the member for Dunkley in welcoming the new changes announced by Telstra in the STD rates. This is a great initiative which will have a significant impact on all outer metropolitan areas, and certainly in my electorate of Robertson it will be warmly welcomed. It means that residents in the electorate of Robertson will now be able to call the Sydney metropolitan area for an untimed 25c call. It is something for which I have also been lobbying for some time and it is pleasing to see that it has now become a reality. Of course, there is also the 99c three-hour community call. Even if you do not use the full amount of time, the STD rate is only 10c per minute, which is also a significant reduction. This change will have a great impact on areas such as the Central Coast of New South Wales. It will also be of great benefit to many of the elderly residents who live in my electorate. For many of those residents, the phone is their lifeline. They have family and friends in Sydney. They were always concerned about the costs of STD charges when they were ringing family members and friends in Sydney. They will now be able to make unlimited calls to Sydney for the cost of 25c. That will make a great difference to their lives. It will also assist in attracting businesses to the Central Coast from the outer to regional areas—(Time expired)
