Mr Horne asked the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, upon notice, on 4 April 2001:

(1) Is the Weakleys Drive and New England Highway intersection part of the National Highway and therefore the responsibility of the Federal Government for funding.

(2) Has his Department estimated the cost of upgrading the intersection with flyovers.

(3) When will funding be made available.

Mr Anderson (Minister for Transport and Regional Services) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes. The Weakleys Drive and New England Highway intersection forms part of the Sydney-Brisbane National Highway corridor, and as such, the intersection is the Federal Government's responsibility.

(2) The Department of Transport and Regional Services has sought information on the estimated cost of the project from the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority who have advised an estimated cost of $23.8 million for the intersection at Weakleys Drive and the New England Highway.

(3) Like all National Highway road projects, funding will be considered in the context of budgetary allocations, and in relation to the broader national road funding priorities in NSW and across Australia.
