Ms Ellis
asked the Minister for Aged Care, upon notice, on 12 October 2000:
(1) Between March 1996 and August 2000, how many spot checks were carried out on nursing homes within the electoral division of Canberra.
(2) How many complaints regarding nursing homes within the electoral division of Canberra were received by her in (a) 1996, (b) 1997, (c) 1998, (d) 1999 and (e) 2000.
(3) Will spot checks be undertaken by her Department after a nursing home receives accreditation; if so, will they be done on a yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, monthly or random basis.

—The answer to the honourable member's question, in accordance with advice provided to me, is as follows:
(1) Four spot checks were carried out by the Department on residential aged care facilities in the electoral division of Canberra between March 1996 and March 2001.
(2) This information is protected under the Aged Care Act 1997.
(3) Yes. Spot checks will be undertaken by the Department on a random basis.
